Health & Safety Policy

Effective Date: 15 May 2025

At Legends Unearthed, your safety is our highest priority. We aim to provide an enjoyable and secure experience for all participants, while respecting the land, history, and people around us.

This policy outlines the responsibilities, expectations, and precautions related to health and safety during your trip.

1. Risk Awareness

Metal detecting in the UK countryside involves outdoor physical activity in variable conditions. Potential risks include:

  • Uneven, muddy, or sloped terrain

  • Weather exposure (wind, rain, sun)

  • Manual digging with tools

  • Tripping hazards (roots, holes, debris)

  • Contact with wildlife, insects, or livestock

  • Potentially sharp objects discovered when digging (glass, sharp metal)

  • Remote locations without immediate medical access

  • Lack of indoor toilet facilities

While we take reasonable precautions to minimise risks, guests participate at their own risk and are expected to act responsibly.

2. Guest Responsibilities

All guests must:

  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor activity (e.g. waterproof boots, layers, sun/rain protection)

  • Stay within designated detecting areas

  • Follow all instructions given by the guide or landowner

  • Use tools and equipment responsibly

  • Report any injuries or hazards immediately

  • Respect farmland, crops, livestock, and rural communities

Guests who fail to follow safety instructions may be asked to leave the trip without refund.

3. Medical Conditions and Fitness

  • Guests must be able to walk and stand for extended periods, often over rough terrain.

  • Guests must be able to kneel, bend, dig, in a variety of soil conditions

  • You are required to disclose any relevant medical conditions or mobility limitations during booking or before arrival.

  • If you have severe allergies, heart or respiratory conditions, or recent injuries, please consult your doctor before booking.

We cannot guarantee immediate access to medical services in rural locations, so please plan accordingly.

4. Weather and Environmental Hazards

British weather is unpredictable. Guests should be prepared for:

  • Sudden changes in weather (rain, heat, wind)

  • Muddy or slippery conditions

  • Limited shelter during field time

Trips will proceed in most weather conditions unless severe weather (e.g. storms, flooding) poses a danger, in which case we may adjust the schedule or cancel for safety reasons.

5. Equipment Safety

  • Guests using Legends Unearthed equipment must follow instruction and treat all items with care.

  • You are responsible for using tools (e.g. shovels, trowels) in a safe, controlled manner.

  • Any damage or loss due to misuse may result in a replacement charge.

6. Emergency Procedures

  • Our team carries basic first aid kits and mobile communication at all times.

  • In the event of an injury, we will assist and contact emergency services as required.

  • Guests are advised to carry any personal medication (e.g. EpiPens, inhalers) with them at all times.

7. Alcohol and Substance Use

For safety and respect of landowners, no alcohol or recreational drugs may be consumed during detecting sessions. Anyone under the influence may be removed from the trip without refund.

8. Insurance

We strongly recommend that guests take out personal travel insurance covering:

  • Medical emergencies

  • Trip delays or cancellations

  • Loss or damage to personal belongings

  • Emergency repatriation
